What is it?

What is POTS? POTS stands for Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome and it is an autonomic nervous system disfunction, where bodily functions such as blood pressure and heart rate are irregular.

  • Symptoms:

    • “Blacking Out”

    • Palpitations

    • Headaches

  • These symptoms can be triggered or activated by triggers like:

    • Standing for long periods of time

    • Caffeine!

    • Heat exposure/dehydration

    • Stress or anxiety

    • Sleep deprivation

  • The best treatment is hydration! Drinking excessive amounts of water is definitely a game changer! Increasing electrolytes, avoiding caffeine, and having a proper sleep schedule are all preventers.

Why is POTS Awareness Important?

POTS awareness is important because many people with the condition face long delays in diagnosis and often feel dismissed or misunderstood by healthcare providers. Greater awareness can lead to earlier recognition, more effective treatment, and better support for those living with the daily challenges of POTS. It also helps reduce stigma, validate patient experiences, and encourage further research into the causes and management of the syndrome.

Personal Speaker:

Audrey Moss, or better known online as Moss Media, has POTS. She grew up doing cheer, but as her symptoms progressed, she had to quit. But as she describes her personal experience, she goes into detail on how it didn’t stop her with getting involved at Lassiter. You may not find her on the sideline in a uniform, but you’ll find her with a camera and a smile.

Fun Fact!

The national color for POTS awareness is teal!
